Boston Ballet’s upcoming program, seasonly titled Winter Experience, which features world premieres by Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen and Helen Pickett will open at Citizens Bank Opera House on February 22, 2024.

“As we curate the future of ballet, it is important to remember where we came from. When re-envisioning Raymonda, I wanted to preserve Petipa’s choreographic gems while removing problematic themes. It is important to expose dancers and audiences to the academic classical approach, adapted for today’s world,” said Nissinen.

“Audiences can enjoy classical ballet and two contemporary works by Helen Pickett, whom we have a long relationship with. I am thrilled she will create her seventh work for Boston Ballet, plus her energizing Petal will finally be seen live in Boston.”

Raymonda also includes choreography by Florence Clerc, a former Paris Opera Ballet Etoile, and Alla Nikitina, a Boston Ballet School coach who specializes in character dance. Clerc created a new Grand Waltz and Dream pas de deux while Nikitina’s focus was the Grand Gallop and Le Cortese Hongrois.

This premiere also boasts about 150 new costumes and scenic design by Robert Perdziola to accompany the new choreography

Pickett will have two of her works as part of Winter Experience. Petal was seen as part of Boston Ballet’s virtual programming during the COVID pandemic and will make its live Boston Ballet debut next month. Her newest – and seventh – work for the company, the 11-dancer cast 2B One, is set to music by Mikael Karlsson. About 2B One, Picket explains:

“Courage is the backbone of art. When a human being chooses a dancer’s life, she/he is thrust into accepting the reality: Change is the only constant. To commit to this space is, in and of itself, daring. Dancers are the agile conduits of this generous, life-giving energy. They take all the risks we wish we could take, and I believe that is why we, the audience, are so drawn to this breathtaking art form”.
