Hong Kong Ballet fans are getting ready for the company’s 19-performance run of its annual production of The Nutcracker to be held at Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Grand Theatre. For select performances, the dancers will be accompanied by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta under the baton of Fayçal Karoui playing Tchaikovsky’s iconic score.
Artistic Director Septime Webre’s version of this holiday classic takes place in Hong Kong and includes cultural references such as a lion dance, rickshaws, the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, a shadow puppet theatre, the White Snake and the Academic, and dim sum that distinguish it from other productions.
New this season, Hong Kong Ballet introduces The Nutcracker Land at the city’s new shopping mall, The Wai. On specific dates, visitors will have special opportunities to either get a sneak peek at The Nutcracker or meet some of the ballet’s characters. This is in addition to The Nutcracker Ballet 360° event and pre-performance workshops and chats that are available at the theatre.
