Lyric Theatre at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts will be host to a trio of dance works by George Balanchine, William Forsythe, and Andonis Foniadakis whose connection is their groundbreaking influence on the world of classical ballet.

“I am thrilled to present a programme that pays homage to the rule breakers of ballet, those who fearlessly pushed the boundaries of tradition and paved the way for a new era of artistic expression.

Balanchine was the original rule breaker who reshaped ballet for the modern era, Forsythe revolutionized contemporary ballet and Foniadakis follows in their footsteps, embracing creativity and pushing boundaries, each leaving an indelible mark on the world of dance.”

– Septime Webre, Artistic Director of Hong Kong Ballet

Opening is Balanchine’s iconic, plotless Serenade where a stage of dancers clad in blue romantic tutus brings Tchaikovsky’s music to a whole other level. Next is a Hong Kong Ballet premiere – Forsythe’s 1987 In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, which has been the baseline of contemporary ballet for more than three decades. Closing is a world premiere by Foniadakis set to Depeche Mode’s songs such as “Waiting for the Night”, “People Are People”, and “Enjoy The Silence”, an homage to the group’s enormous influence in the 90s alternative music scene.

“The songs’ raw, emotional themes explored the complexities of the human condition, and the unique blend of dark, atmospheric electronic sounds was the perfect backdrop for my creative vision, allowing me to craft a ballet that was both visually and emotionally captivating,” explains Foniadakis.
