For their second annual Visions program to be presented later this month at The Sofia, Sacramento Ballet is preparing for three contemporary dance premieres by Marika Brussel, Ihsan Rustem, and Ma Cong.

SacBallet will put its dancer’s ever-growing skillsets to the test through Visions, our showcase of current dance innovation. We bring to stage works from choreographers who are changing the global face of dance. Visions promises to be exhilarating, exciting and rewarding for the dancers and audiences alike.”

Opening the program is Northern California native Brussel’s world premiere Glimmering for which the dancers have been fully immersed not only in the movement and music, but in a commissioned scent created to be worn during the in-studio creative process.

Inspired by Benjamin Wardell’s poem “The Clouds Inside” and set to sounds by Ólafur Arnalds and orchestration from contemporary composer Max Richter, Rustem’s State of the Matter makes its SacBallet premiere of this piece whose “movement represent[s] life journeys often beyond human control”.

Closing out the triple-bill is Cong’s Carry Me Anew, another first for the company, which focuses on the athletic and complex aspect of partnering.
