Commissioned by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens´ Artistic Director, Ivan Cavallari, Peter Quanz’s La Dame Aux Camélias will premiere in October in the company´s home city of Montreal.
Inspired by Alexandre Dumas fils´ novel of the same name, Quanz´s choreography is set to a cornucopia of musical compositions by Carl Maria con Weber, Lili Boulanger, Fanny Mendelssohn, and Clara Shumann, all played by Les Grands Ballets Orchestra.
Peter Quanz's La Dame Aux Camélias
Quanz adapts the true story of Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval set in 19th-century Paris to a neoclassical and modern romantic full-length ballet, his second for the company.
His version for the 45-member Les Grands Ballets is sectioned into three scenes – Love, Sacrifice, and Abyss – each one featuring a Marguerite performed by a different dancer.
In Love, Marguerite (Rachele Buriassi) falls madly in love with Armand Duval, a young man from the 19th-century Parisian bourgeoisie, and becomes entangled in a passionate whirlwind.
In Sacrifice, Marguerite (Anya Nesvitaylo) is a courtesan in Paris, living a life of luxury and frivolity, often in the company of wealthy and influential men. For the sake of Armand and his family, she gives up her scandalous love affair and conceals her illness, tuberculosis.
And in Abyss, Disillusioned, rejected by society, stripped of her love, Marguerite (Maude Sabourin) sinks into a state of emotional distress.
All performances of Peter Quanz’s La Dame Aux Camélias will be held at Salle Wilfred-Pelletier, Place des Arts.
