The Washington Ballet 2024-2025 Season
The Washington Ballet 2024-2025 Season, the first with Edwaard Liang at the helm, features several ballets by the new Artistic Director himself; in the triple bills, the Capital City will see his Murmuration and Seasons.
Additionally, Liang will be restaging Septime Webre’s – who was Artistic Director of the company from 1999-2016) ALICE (in wonderland).
Prior to the official start of the season, The Washington Ballet will be performing at Wolf Trap as part of the venue’s summer season.
The season opens with the when WE take flight program. George Balanchine’s Stravinsky Violin Concerto set to Stravinsky’s stirring score, captures the essence of a plotless ballet where the music and movement speak volumes. Gustavo Ramirez Sansano’s 18 + 1 is a vibrant fusion of humor and electrifying dance that pays homage to the past while dancing toward the future, all set to the lively rhythms of Pérez Prado’s mambo music. Liang’s Murmuration is a ballet that mirrors the awe-inspiring patterns of starling flocks in flight, showcasing the beauty of collective movement and the power of unity in dance.
Set in the heart of D.C., Septime Webre’s reimagined The Nutcracker, which celebrates its 20th birthday, features a George Washington Nutcracker who leads a heroic battle against the notorious Rat King. Amidst the charming streets of Georgetown, cherry blossom trees, and nods to D.C.’s rich history make this an unforgettable experience for all ages.
2025 begins with the triple-billed transcenDANCE.
Ulysses Dove’s masterpiece, Vespers, created in 1986, is a dramatic work inspired by the choreographer’s childhood memories of spirituality and maternal energy, The work showcases the athleticism and grace of six dancers propelled by Mikel Rouse’s profound electronic score. With its stark, ferocious quality and intense drive, Vespers is a heart-rending exploration of the human spirit’s resilience.
Set to Max Richter’s recomposed Four Seasons, Liang’s choreography of the same name beautifully interprets the essence of each season, capturing the joy of spring, the passion of summer, the playfulness of autumn, and the intensity of winter. With its layers of depth and artistry, Seasons is a remarkable and evocative performance that transports audiences to the heart of nature’s beauty and chaos.
Known for her daring style that transcends traditional ballet, Jennifer Archibald’s latest creation for The Washington Ballet is a mesmerizing fusion of American popular music genres, including Hip-Hop, R&B, and Pop. Set to debut at The Kennedy Center, this electrifying piece pulsates with the energy of a live DJ, an unforgettable spectacle that challenges conventions and ignites the stage with raw emotion and unbridled passion.
The season closes with Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland), restaged by Liang. Alice tumbles into the whimsical wonderland, encounters curious creatures, magical transformations, and the elusive White Rabbit. With stunning choreography, evocative music, and mesmerizing visuals, this production is an unforgettable escape into a world where imagination knows no bounds.
