City Ballet of San Diego is preparing for a triple bill of premieres to be performed at Balboa Theatre and the California Center for the Arts later this month.

Opening the program is An American in Paris, a world premiere by Resident Choreographer Geoffrey Gonzalez inspired by the George Gershwin composition of the same name. It tells the story of an aspiring fashion designer who travels to the French capital to learn more about the luxury fashion houses of the 1960s.

One of San Diego Ballet’s Artistic Directors, Elizabeth Wistrich, creates a brand new Boléro – The Awakening to Maurice Ravel’s famous score, exploring ways in which “the heart reacts to different emotions”.

Closing the evening is a company premiere, Christopher Wheeldon’s Morphoses, an athletic ballet set to music by Gyorgy Ligeti. This marks the first time the company is to perform a piece by the famous choreographer.

“In putting together a season, it is always challenging to stage a program of all new ballets, But the company is up for the challenge. And I like presenting new experiences for our San Diego audiences, be it new ballets from our talented resident choreographers or works by internationally known choreographers. I am thrilled to add a much-anticipated Christopher Wheeldon ballet to the company’s repertoire. This is a must-see program for all.”
