Artistic Director Adam W. McKinney has announced that the version of Cinderella set to be the closing program of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s 2023-2024 season will be the U.S. premiere of the ballet choreographed by Jayne Smeulders.
Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s score, Smeulders first created Cinderella in 2011 while a principal dancer with West Australian Ballet, staying true to the familiar storyline. Pittsburgh audiences will be witness to a re-imagined version with updated choreography with new sets by Simon Guilbault and new costumes by Marie-Chantale Vaillancourt.
“We are delighted to bring Jayne Smeulders’ version of Cinderella to the U.S. – and to Pittsburgh audiences – for the first time,” said McKinney. “Jayne’s version is classic, visually stunning and remarkably choreographed. It is an absolutely perfect fit for PBT.”
