The Alberta Ballet 2019-2020 season is full of premieres, classics, and contemporary ballet. In fact, Artistic Director, Jean Grand-Maître, has already begun working on what will be the world premiere of his Frankenstein, based on Mary Shelley’s horror novel.
And Associate Artistic Director, Christopher Anderson, will be re-staging Swan Lake, the epitome of classical ballet.
Also of note is the Canadian premiere of Septime Webre’s Peter Pan.
Audiences can also continue their tradition of attending Alberta Ballet’s annual production of Edmund Stripes’ The Nutcracker, accompanied by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
Works by George Balanchine, Helen Pickett, and Anne Plamondon will be featured in the first ever Alberta Ballet Unleashed program of contemporary dance.
“We are constantly searching for productions that will surprise and delight our audiences,” said Grand-Maître. “From the sensuous exoticism of Taj Express to the sublime classicism of Swan Lake, there is something for everyone to enjoy and remember. Our audiences will continue to be stimulated and engaged by various productions highlighting the vitality, the beauty and the power of dance in all its awesome incarnations.”
– Jean Grand-Maître, Artistic Director of Alberta Ballet
Alberta Ballet will also present two other companies to complement their season. Taj Express hails from Mumbai, India and will bring Bollywood to Calgary. Diavolo is the LA-based company that were finalists on America’s Got Talent and will showcase their fusion of contemporary dance, martial arts, acrobatics, gymnastic, and hip-hop.
