Just a few weeks after the presentation of the Alberta Ballet 2023-2024 season, the Calgary Herald has reported that Artistic Director Christopher Anderson has announced that he will be leaving the company.
This news comes only one year after Anderson took the helm of the Canadian ballet company for which he was named Co-Artistic Director with Jean Grand-Maitre in 2021. He has been a part of Alberta Ballet since 2015 when he was named its Rehearsal Director and will leave his current position effective December 31, 2023.
Christopher Anderson Leaves Alberta Ballet
“With his thoughtful guidance, vision and fortitude, Alberta Ballet was the first performing arts company to return to the Jubilee after the COVID-19 shutdown, with Christopher’s world premiere of Swan Lake.” – Daryl Fridhandler, Chair of the Board of Directors
Chris George, President and CEO of Alberta Ballet added:
“Christopher has fostered many valuable international connections for Alberta Ballet, and the Ballet’s 2022-23 season was a series of artistic successes, with several outstanding collaborations with world-renowned choreographers. The Ballet is grateful to have his steady, thoughtful hand, continuity and support as we look to Alberta Ballet’s next artistic director. We look forward to seeing how a new chapter unfolds for him and wish him all the best in the years ahead.”
Although neither Christopher Anderson nor officials from Alberta Ballet were available for comment, the board has informed that they have engaged Arts Consulting Group to recruit a new artistic director and will form a search committee in the coming weeks.
