The Joffrey Ballet is thrilled to announce the return of the magical production of Christopher Wheeldon’s Nutcracker at the Lyric Opera House.
The Tony Award®-winning choreographer’s version of the holiday story transports audiences back to the enchanting world of Chicago’s World Fair in 1893, showcasing the city’s rich cultural heritage and evoking the wonder of the season.

The tale unfolds as we are introduced to young Marie and her mother, an accomplished sculptress hard at work on the iconic Statue of the Republic, a central masterpiece of the World’s Fair. The family hosts a splendid Christmas Eve celebration and thanks to the arrival of the charismatic and enigmatic Great Impresario, the destiny of Marie and her dear Nutcracker Prince takes an extraordinary turn.
As the clock strikes midnight, the boundaries between fantasy and reality dissolve, propelling Marie on a once-in-a-lifetime journey through the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, filled with awe-inspiring sights, sounds, and enchantment.
Set to the timeless and beloved score of Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker features live music performed by the Lyric Opera Orchestra, conducted by Scott Speck, Music Director of The Joffrey Ballet.
