The Dance Theatre of Harlem 2023 New York season is distinct from those in the past; this year’s Vision Gala will honor soon-to-retire Artistic Director Virginia Johnson and marks the final NYC DTH engagement for the leader.
During the April 20th event (with Chelsea Clinton serving as Honorary Chair) Johnson will be presented with the Arthur Mitchell Vision Award in recognition of her 28-year commitment to the company. First a dancer with Dance Theatre Harlem, then appointed the company’s second-ever Artistic Director by founder Arthur Mitchell, Johnson has guided the organization to world-class heights.
Her successor, current Resident Choreographer Robert Garland, will also be present at the JUBILANCE themed event and will present the recent work he choreographed for San Francisco Ballet, Haffner Serenade. Also on the Vision Gala program is Geoffrey Holder’s Dougla, Nacho Duato’s Coming Together, and a special performance by Dance Theatre of Harlem School.
