The Hong Kong Ballet 2024-2025 season, titled “Never Standing Still”, marks the company’s 45th birthday and is celebrated with the production of a special promotional video.

“Our whimsical Tutu Academy short film is about the unifying nature of ballet in honour of our 45th Anniversary.

Set in retro-futuristic Hong Kong, it follows a space alien as he navigates a strange, new environment and finds acceptance and happiness through the universal language of ballet, reminding us all of the beauty of meaningful connections in our weird and wonderful world.”

Septime Webre, Artistic Director of Hong Kong Ballet

This sapphire year boasts the premieres of four full-length ballets (including the annual performances of Webre’s Nutcracker), tours to Macao and Beijing, and a line-up of international guest artists who will join the company for the 45th Anniversary International Ballet Gala and Giselle.

The guest artists for the Gala include:

And guest artists for Charla Genn and HKB Artistic Director Septime Webre’s re-envisioned (with new sets and costumes by Jerome Kaplan) production of Giselle are Marianela Nuñez (The Royal Ballet), Hugo Marchand (Paris Opera Ballet), Caixeta, and Viviana Durante.

The season opens with Webre’s The Wizard of Oz which is set to an original score by Matthew Pierce, followed by a world premiere production of Hong Kong Ballet’s Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky’s The Butterfly Lovers. The latter, which brings to the stage the Chinese legend of a humble scholar and an aristocratic heiress, features an original score by Chinese composer Tian Mi and set and costumes by Academy Award winner Tim Yip.

The Butterfly Lovers will also tour to Macao.

Also touring is ALICE (in wonderland) which brings Webre’s creativity to Beijing’s prestigious National Centre for the Performing Arts (The Egg).

Young audiences will have an opportunity to experience ALICE as well in an event that includes excerpts from the ballet along with other interactive activities to partake in.

In spring 2025, Hong Kong Ballet will present Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Frida, a ballet inspired by the Mexican artist’s life story and set to an original score by Peter Salem.
