In just a few more weeks, Hong Kong Ballet presents Coco Chanel; the Life of a Fashion Icon, a world premiere by Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa.
Coco Chanel is a collaboration between the Hong Kong based company, Atlanta Ballet, and Queensland Ballet and will subsequently be performed by the other two companies in 2024.
For the premiere, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ Lyric Theatre will be filled with the sounds of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Fayçal Karoui, playing Peter Salem’s original score.
Jerome Kaplan has designed the sets and costumes, and Nancy Meckler has provided artistic collaboration. Salem, Kaplan, and Meckler worked together previously on Dutch National Ballet‘s production of Frida, also choreographed by Ochoa.
A brilliant designer and shrewd businesswoman, firebrand Coco Chanel redefined the world of fashion and outfitted a new generation of modern women who were intelligent, ambitious and rebellious. Her iconic little black dress and bouclé jackets and skirts are now classic style staples seen all over the world.
