Jessica Lang Named Artist in Residence of Sarasota Ballet

Beginning with Sarasota Ballet’s 2023-2024 season, Jessica Lang will be the company’s Artist in Residence, the start of a three-year partnership with the southwest Florida ballet company.

This announcement comes after the successful premiere of Shades of Spring that Lang created for Sarasota Ballet’s Joyce Theater appearance last year and ahead of the staging of her 2012 Lyric Pieces which will be performed in the closing program of this season.

“Jessica and I have known each other for some years. And it’s no secret that I’ve been a huge admirer of her work. Working with her for the past year with the premiere of Shades of Spring made it apparent that we should continue this collaboration as my vision for this Company aligns perfectly with her artistic and professional work. The energy between Jessica and the dancers was undeniable, and having her as Artist in Residence for the next three years is a perfect opportunity for The Sarasota Ballet and Jessica to create unforgettable performances.”

Jessica Lang Joins Sarasota Ballet

“Sarasota Ballet is a rather unique ballet Company in the US. Iain curates really rich programming that provides exciting opportunities for the dancers and audiences. His commitment and deep respect for the historical preservation of English choreographers like Ashton and MacMillian is really important, and no other Company in the US has such a narrowed focus. And because of this, the quality of the dancers is refined and promising.

Then Iain programs American masters like Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, and Paul Taylor while layering in the next generation of creative voices, which pushes the Company into other territories of movement, and they rise to the challenge.

It is exciting to be a part of that quality and vision, and I look forward to contributing to the organization’s commitment to ballet and art.”

– Jessica Lang, Artist in Residence of Sarasota Ballet

Jessica Lang is an American director and choreographer based in NYC who graduated from The Juilliard School before becoming a member of Twlya Tharp’s Company THARP!

Since 1999, Ms. Lang has created more than 100 original works for her own company Jessica Lang Dance as well as others around the world including

  • American Ballet Theatre
  • Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater,
  • Pacific Northwest Ballet
  • Birmingham Royal Ballet
