The Joffrey Ballet 2019-2020 season is filled with premieres and audience favorites, all accompanied by the Chicago Philharmonic. For the first time on a Chicago stage will be Cathy Marsten‘s Jane Eyre which actually makes its North American debut in June 2019 when the American Ballet Theatre performs it in New York. This program will be done in partnership with ABT.
The company’s mixed program in February 2020 also features Chi-Town debuts: Justin Peck‘s The Times Are Racing which is a ballet danced in sneakers and Mono Lisa and The Sofa by Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili. Included also is a world premiere – Bliss! by Stephanie Martinez.
“Next season we will showcase the range, diversity and quality of work being created for ballet companies in the 21st century. We want to introduce Chicago audiences to fresh faces, all of whom are shaping the dance landscape today.”
– Ashley Wheater, Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet
Christopher Wheeldon’s choreography will be seen twice. This will be the fourth year that The Joffrey Ballet performs his The Nutcracker, and Commedia – inspired by music from Igor Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite – will join the mixed program bill.
Closing out the season will be Yuri Possokhov‘s Don Quixote, a version returning to Chicago after its premiere here in 2011. Fans will appreciate another Possokhov creation following the success of his world premiere Anna Karenina in the 2018-2019 season.
